Why do we celebrate Labor Day?
For most people, two things come to mind: the end of summer and a day off work. However, Labor Day is actually a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States since 1984.
Who founded Labor Day?
Most historians credit Peter McGuire, who was the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, with the original idea of a special day for workers. Others credit Matthew Maguire, who was a secretary of the International Association of Machinists.
Other Labor Day facts:
–The decision to make Labor Day the first Monday of September was approved on June 28, 1894.
–Historians say the expression “no white after Labor Day” comes from when the upper class would return from their summer vacations and stow away their lightweight, white summer clothes as they returned back to school and work.
–Americans worked 12-hour days seven days a week during the 19th century!
Sierra HR Partners wishes you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!
